I've been collecting golf cards for about 10 years and I think I have owned(at one time or another) almost every card I have wanted with only two exceptions: the 1932 Abdulla Bobby Jones and the 1928(?or 27) Crescent Confectionary Bobby Jones. I have seen and bid on the Abdulla, just never wanted to pay up for it, but have never even seen a Crescent Confectionary Jones. Lew L. and I have spoken about this card and he has said he has seen a picture of the Crescent, but never owned one. This is my "Holy Grail", what is yours?

I have owned an Abdulla Jones, I will post a photo here later...needless to say a difficult card. I have owned 2 of them actually, but sold the other as part of the complete set some time ago.

My best card is likely my 1900 Copes Old Tom Morris. Highest ever graded in PSA 7 condition. I have owned and sold a PSA 5 and a PSA 6 of the same card...I have NO IDEA what the 7 would bring...but it would be A LOT

Right now - top on my list is 1900 Copes Old Tom
second would be 1900 Copes Young Tom.

I jumped into collecting golf cards this year.

I have to say, out of my last dozen or so purchases... its probably been 90% golf and 10% baseball.

Paul - I look forward to your posts and I look forward to watching this forum grow.

First of all, I like the new forum. Nice break from the vintage bb cards stuff. Anyhow, does anyone know if there are cards of Walter Travis? What little digging that I've done has been inconclusive, at best. Thanks

Judson,

There are two cards of him in the 1914 Marsuma Famous Golfers, #'s 38 and 49. You should be able to pick these up for approx. $100 each, depending on condition of course.

There always seems to be a lack of golf cards for anyone to buy, that is way it can be challenging - I know the cards are out there. The last two years I have been buying and selling and I always come across a few here and there. The challenge is what keeps me going with golf cards, and I love the history.

I agree with Jimmy... vintage golf cards seem difficult to come by.

Other than eBay, Lew, and greenjacketauctions.com -

does anyone know good sources for vintage golf cards? dealers? shows?

Thanks for your interest, yes I look on eBay all the time and attend shows. There just are not a lot of cards out there. I have more luck with antique dealers more than anyone else. I will continue to work at getting more on my website at www.jbsportsauctions.com - having a website and selling at shows and ebay is the only way I can pay for items I would like to have.

I also collect old balls and clubs - there will be a few dealers including myself at the Boston show in November. There are a few good dealers from the South that sell on eBay that are pretty good.

Take care

Jimmy

Jimmy,

If you come across or have a 'vardon flyer' for sale...
keep me in mind.

I would love to add it to my collection.

I have yet to jump into memorabilia. But, I wouldn't mind starting there.

I am going to bookmark your site. great stuff.

Regards,
Joe

I am a long time researcher, collector, and archivist of Jewish sports memorabilia, but am interested in collecting cards/memorabilia of Jewish golfers:

Herman Barron (greatest Jewish golfer ever)
Arnold Blum
Sidney Brews
Lord Lionel Cohen
Andrea Cohn
Roger Ginsberg
Fred Gutman
Robert Jacobson
Philip King
Lewis Myers
Elaine Rosenthal
Jane Weiller-Selz
Charles Zittel

There are plenty more old-timers

Thanks.
Alan

Jimmy,

I am not following what you mean by 'paper dealer'.

Vardon Flyer - I mean the Spalding ball under that brand name (early 1900s).

I would love to jump into collecting memorabilia, and start it with that ball.

Regards,
Joe

edit to add this image (reprint poster ad for the ball):

paper dealers sell advertising pieces, postcards, books, trade cards and sometimes non-sports cards. There are just as many postcard shows as sports cards shows. I just came back from a trip and purchased some nice items

One way to find some older tobacco/tea cards of golfers and/or soccer players is to go to www.ebay.co.uk and look under Collectables -> Cigarette/ Tea/ Gum Cards.

Sometimes these cards don't show up on eBay USA and can be found for good prices. I have found many soccer cards that are impossible to come by in the States but more often only show up on eBay UK.
