Count me in the camp that thinks the photo matches up with the card.

Reminds me of conversations I used to have with a sports artist friend of mine. I'd commission him to do some pieces for me based on photos I had in my collection or that I'd found elsewhere and he'd call me up and obsess or worry over little details, trying to get everything correct.

I'd try to put his mind at ease by telling him if I wanted the art to look exactly like the photo I'd just make an enlargement of the photo and frame it on my wall. I'd encourage him to play around with it and get a little creative.
