Pick out half a dozen players you're interested in, then start bidding LOW on their cards. Watch the auctions, keep a list of the dates you got outbid, and the amount. After losing a few times, you'll get a 'ballpark' idea of what is a reasonable price for one.

With the exception of the Demmitt St. Louis and O'Hara St. Louis cards, and the big ones, Wagner, Plank, Magie, and Doyle, there are plenty of the other white border tobacco cards to go around. So don't fret if you get outbid, another one will be offered soon.
