At one time a collector would buy a card in excellent condition, get it, look at it, say "whoa! this is nice", and repeat this process many times.
That individual, it appears is rapidly being replaced by the one who gets his excellent card, looks at it and says "whoa! this is nice, I think it may get a <pick a number>. Then this collector, knowing full well that everything is for sale sooner or later (when the price and other factors are favorable) will select the slab house of choice, submit the card and sit on the edge of his chair hoping, hoping, that his card gets the <pick a number> of his preference.

It is a change in philosophy brought about by factors currently in play in the hobby. Some regret this change, others understand, accept and even appreciate it.

I believe in the same miracle as a few others... bring on the meltdowna and clear out the suckers that only got into the hobby to make a buck. I'd rather pick up a lot of pieces during a meltdown rather than a few during a speculatory period. meltdown, crash, whatever - bring it on!

Do you guys remember that at one time money wasn't part of the equation? It was simply guys getting together and trading cards. Or it was guys getting together to flip cards or playing knockdown. Or guys getting together looking at the stats or cartoons on the back of the card.

The hitch with your relentless nostalgia is that the events you describe never happened. I have cards I bought 20 years ago; they weren't free then and, thankfully, they wouldn't be free now if I parted with them. Even Joe P. wouldn't accept the syrupy blather you're peddling.

It must be before your time. It's also possible it depends on the neighborhood you grew up in. I suppose in some neighborhoods it was always about the money. Actually in our neighborhood, comics was the big collectible, but baseball cards ran a close second.

Was it really that different in your neighborhoods, I'm talking about SF in the '60s, I went to Madison elementary school. I remember that we didn't have big allowances back then so we couldn't buy old cards even if we wanted to.

But we could scrounge up nickels and dimes to buy wax packs and trade.

I agree, caramel cards are going to go through the floor and are a horrible investment, especially E94s, E97s and E98s. Please get rid of them now while you can. I will be at the National to buy these unwanted cards from you as a public service

The period that I refer to is the late 1930's early 1940's, up to 1945 in Spanish Harlem.
You probably weren't even born yet.
We didn't even own bikes to put our cards between the spokes.
The difference is as great as the question posed by a current collector asking, "What was collecting like before the advent of the PC, and eBay?"

There is a disconnect here. Peter is clearly referring to a time period when he was a kid, collecting and trading with his friends. Im sure kids still do that today. However, it seems that this is really about adult collectors, dealers and hobby issues that kids dont concern themselves with. Even back in the 60's, Im sure that store owners, vendors, dealers, etc. were concerned with the money.
