Neat question - I picked a couple of Alans (the original poster) questions and put them in order. I removed some that didn't apply:

YES - Is it researching aspects of baseball history?
YES - Is it finally completing a set?
YES, ALTHOUGH IT IS A RARE OCCURENCE - Is it winning something rare on ebay at a good price?
YES, ALTHOUGH WINNING THESE AUCTIONS IS A RARE OCCURENCE - Is it going thru/bidding in the auction catalogs?
YES - Is it meeting & socializing with the collectors/dealers at shows?

SoSo - Is it going thru ads in SCD or B/S/T?

ONLY WHEN I'M IN NEED OF SOAP OPERATIC READING - Is it this message board?

NO - Is it finding cards at low prices to "resell"?
