How do you collect him?
I recently learned that I am (very) distantly related to him (and only through marriage), but I figure, hey, I'm new to this era of collecting, and what better HOFer to start with than a "family" member!!?!?!

Jason, that's a 1936 R311. Gorgeous cards. I started slowly working on the set a few months ago and there's not a single one that doesn't have a captivating photo.

They're very oversized. 6x8".

As to your question, I have no idea, so hopefully some folks can chime in on that one...

thanks to those who have posted thus far...I have to say I find the 39 Play Ball and Al's R311 both quite nice...I have also seen the 41 Double Play before, but I will prefer to get a card focused on just Hank when I save up the dough...

Great guy to be related to.....he is a personal hero of mine, especially after watching the documentary about him.
I have made it a personal mission to collect all of his vintage cards, and I have a bunch of them, which I would scan and post, if I had a scanner at home!

Lou Gehrig says . . . "One of the big offensive factors in the work of the Detroit Tigers is the lusty clubbing of Henry Greenberg, New Yorker, who plays at first base for the Detroit team. Greenberg is spending his fifth season in professional ball. He was grabbed by the Tigers in 1930 and after a few years of seasoning in the minor leagues, came back to win a regular place. He is six feet, four inches in height, and weighs 215 pounds. Last year he batted .301 in 117 games and ranked high in fielding his position."
David McDonald says . . . "Back when I was a kid in New York in the fifties we used to wait outside the Yankees clubhouse after ballgames to get players to sign our scorecards. On a good day you could get a dozen or 15 Yankee or visiting ALer autographs. After one game in the 1957 season when I was seven years old my Dad pointed to a tall man in an overcoat standing in a crowd and said "That's Hank Greenberg." I walked over to the man and I remember looking up at a giant as I said "My Dad says you're Hank Greenberg." To which he replied in a kind voice, "That's right." At which point I thrust my scorecard at him and said "Sign here." The crowd got a chuckle, I got an autograph and a nice memory for an old baseball fan. (The autographed scorecards, the bicycle-spoked '57 Topps cards, Superboy comics and my coonskin cap all landfill now. Or perhaps floating around on eBay)."

Hank Greenberg was raised in the Bronx and went to James Monroe High School in the Bronx. Ed Kranepool came along in the early 60's and broke all of Hank's records. I was raised in the Bronx and a student at James Monroe and one year behind Ed Kranepool, so I always have had an affinity for Hank Greenberg items.
Here is my favorite.

There is something historically seductive about antique letters and such...very cool piece of baseball history.

edited to add:
you know, from everything I have seen, read, and heard about him, he would appear to have been an absolutely amazing person (and this letter is a great example of it)...a classic role model and of the kind that people originally coined the phrase for...quite something. Where did these people go?
