It could be a case of two people placing high bids they were comfortable with to win the auction thinking no one else would go anywhere near that high. It's happened before and it will happen again.
I've done it with a few cards I really wanted and luckly no one else wanted the card as bad as me, so I got them at a decent price anyway.
