Ways to assemble a nice collection?

I recognize my financial limitations, and focus on affordable St. Louis Cardinal cards and items that interest me. Some pre war stuff is interesting but unaffordable, and some is affordable but of no interest to me.

I also look for affordable Hall of Famers.

I occasionally venture off into something else such as 60's/70's football or something.

But if I'm buying prewar it's T206, or St. Louis stuff pretty much exclusively. Otherwise I wind up with a bunch of 33 Goudey commons when I have no desire to put a set together.
