Ways to assemble a nice collection?

I'm still searching for my collection's character.

With that in mind....
there are definitely items in my collection that are there for the long haul -
and there are others that I get bored of quickly and look to sell (no matter how much I thought I wanted it beforehand).

The problem is - I don't do such a good job (pre-purchase) of identifying what the potential 'long term keeper' is.
If I could do that, it probably would save me a bunch of time and money.
