I won a 48 Leaf Joe D in the Mastronet Auction which now means I can get rid of my PSA 4. |

I would first disclose that PSA mislabeled the card as a 1948 card when in fact they came out in 1949. |

Knowing how you feel about these issues you should sell it as a PSA 4 even though it means leaving a lot of money on the table. You aren't going to feel good about yourself, I don't think, if you knowingly profit on a 4 turned 8. And I don't think anyone is going to sell it for you and disclose that it came out of a 4. |

If you ask Mastro to turn it into an 8 then our dinner would be no more than a social gathering. Any discussion about improving hobby ethics would be superfluous. |

What I would do- either leave it as is or perhaps consider resubmitting it to the graders for a second look. Getting rid of the crease would be unacceptable. |

i'll bet there will be some people who will bid on it, with the intention of taking the crease out(& resubmitting) and others who buy the card and not the slab grade and cannot afford an 8 but feel as you said this is a beautiful card. after it sells i guess we will never really know. edited to add i would also bet that it sells for much more than a typical vg/ex slabbed card. |

Ahhh, but Jim didn't feel that way about the beautiful card. It was all about the number. If he felt so good about it, he would not have replaced it, nor contemplated its disposal. |

And I collect raw cards that are about vg to ex, a very few sets, some Cardinal cards, type cards of some sets, and specific players depending on who they are and what they did... an example of that would be Doc Prothro, who played for the Reds, Red Sox, and in Washington, in the early 20s. He played in the PCL and is on a Zee-Nut card. He was a dentist, hence the knickname. His son Tommy married a girl named Ann who was from Franklin, KY, my hometown. Tommy coached football, college and NFL, he coached the Rams, and was on the cover of SI. So I'm tickled when I pick up a Prothro card. |

There will be vultures lined up waiting to buy that card in it's holder or raw. I guarantee you somewhere very close down the road it will be turned into an 8 (or 7) with a little help. I don't know the answer but this is what I am told makes many people millionaires nowadays....Those exact kind of cards do it. Again, I don't have the answer but figured I would at least make the the truth be known. This is not a debatable statement I am making. It is a fact......best regards |

Jim- I'd sell it as a 4, albeit a very nice one, and hope people still buy the card not the holder. The only alternative is to crack it open, fully describe the card and sell it raw if you think that will bring more money. I would absolutely not try to remove the crease or have someone else do it for me. |

Jim- the frustrating thing about this is you could do the right thing and sell it as a 4, and then the winning bidder could crack it out, remove the crease, regrade it, and make thousands of dollars profit. So the extra money you ethically refused to take will just be taken by the next guy. |

I'd leave it in the zoo pen, and if an elephant happens to step on it an elephant happens to step on it. You aren't respensible for act of elephant. |

Would you be able to follow it? It will likely be reholdered at some point, and then perhaps sold privately. You may never see it again. |
