Value increases and decreases

When we have these discussions about the future value of vintage cards nobody seems to take the state of the economy into account. We know the very wealthy will likely weather any storm but what about the proverbial middle class? How would a weakened economy affect the average collector and consequently the middle of the pack cards that typically transact?
