Adams was very jealous of Jefferson - felt he got too much credit for the revolution, and Adams himself not enough. He had a legitimate beef. Only in recent years, largely because of David McCulloch's excellent biography, has Adams started to get his due. He was also very competitive, and wanted to outlive Jefferson to achieve the final victory. His last words were a frustrated, "Jefferson still lives". Jefferson had actually died a few hours earlier, but the news didn't reach Adams before he died hunself. Thus, even though he won the final victory, he never knew it. |
