Empire Auction in NJ
Posted By: Brian
Did anyone happen to be there at todays auction and see why the album of tobacco cards brought $28,000?? I was a phone bidder and from what i was told and the pictures online, I thought my bid of 5,500 was plenty. Was there a card there that was unusual or did the auctioneer not tell me about some cards? I am just curious as to why it brought $28,000. I mean, it was a regular estate auction and not a baseball card auction and yet they got Robert Edward Auction PRICES????? Let me know if anyone of you were there. |

There were over 200 cards in total with Cobb, Mathewson, Lajoie, etc. $5,500 would have been under $30 a card which would have been more than a steal. I saw it, emailed the place for pictures and called once without getting a return so I decided not to do any buying from them. If the cards were in decent condition (guessing they were T206s by the names of the players) then the final price tag doesn't seem too high for the amount of hofers included in the lot. If an estate auction advertises online, there are so many people searching that a large amount of the time the prices will be about retail. |

Martin, one of the workers there desribed them to me as mostly stained and creased and it just didnt sound like they were in great shape. It would have helped if they would have put more pics online instead of a select few. But $28,000 is wacky for cards in vg condition or worse! |

I was there with a fellow N54 board member yesterday and, as many of you have guessed, there was a good bit more to the lot than what was shown on the website. |

I know there were two cobbs, 1 philadelphia caramel and 1 t206, 3 matty's including a croft cocoa, 1 wagner dockman and sons, and alot of hall of famers in crofts cocoa and t206 all in vg or less shape. So what was the hidden gem @ 28,000? |
