Based upon my experiences, I think you're safe with these suggestions:

Lunch: Bergoff's (German, in the Loop - mt brother likes the food; I like their beer)
Hotdogs: Portillo's
Pizza: Ginos East or Lou Malnati's

Carson's for ribs
I second the Cheesecake Factory, even for a meal

My mom loves Oberweis Dairy for ice cream

If you're a beer lover, among others, Chicago has Old Style & Special Export
