It's not difficult for the collector to identify reprints of the early ones if he knows what to look for.

Also, if a sign has been reprinted there are usually a lot of them on the market. With lithography, there is a big up front printing cost and the reprinter has to make a ton of signs to make up for the initial cost. This means that if the 'Joe Blow tobacco' sign was reprinted in 1995, there will usually be tons of them around, including on eBay. If you rarely if ever see your sign for sale, that's a good sign it hasn't been reprinted.
