This is the Oxford, Nebraska Indians - a fake traveling Indian squad formed by Buck Beltzer to compete with the Nebraska Indians. They were not nearly as popular as the Nebraska Indians team because, well....they weren't really indians. Beltzer and his brother would later buy the Nebraska Indians team from Guy Green.

"Holy Grail" Category:
A nice condition Duckweb Glove example. Few and far between... these simply never turn up.

"Attainable someday, but not anytime soon" Category:
The Spalding Fielder Trophy currently in Lelands... I know it's rapidly going to escape my current budget.

"Something I may be able to afford this year (if I don't eat out)" Category:
The Old Gold Tri-Paneled Ad Sign currently in Hunt's Auction (lot #523). I like the Wilson Ad Piece (lot #524) equally, but Hunts' estimate scared me away from even an absentee bid.

"False Hope" Category:
The Phillies Sweater in Huggins & Scott. I shouldn't even be writing this, as I don't want to draw attention to it - but the current bid is only a fraction of what this gorgeous piece is worth. Perhaps it's gone up by now... haven't checked it since Monday afternoon.

"Realistic" Category:
Neat Baseball Figural Clock, or 1939 Reds Champs Pennant (both in Hunt's)

Brock...

Totally agree... the Mueller Clock and Rock-Ola Arcade Machine are holy grails of the first order! Of course there are too many holy grails to list, but those two would rank waaaay up there for me as well.

If you are ever at the Cliff House Restaurant in SF, check out the old Arcade Museum in the back. They actually have a Rock-Ola Machine that you can play an unlimited number of times. Considering its value, I am surprised they let so many people handle it.

They have many other killer items as well, including a frightening "Laughing Sal" animated mannequin (that scared the crap out of me as a kid). It was a fixture at the old Playland Amusement Park, which was dismantled in the '60s.

That is quite surprising that they will let just anyone use it. I dont know if my heart could take actually seeing and using the thing and not being able to take it home with me. You wouldn't happen to have the security alarm code or a key to the back door of this restaurant would ya? There is a corner in the living room that really needs something and the Rock-ola game would go nicely.

Here's the link to the Museum that has the Rock-Ola Arcade Game. Apparently, they have now moved to Pier 45 in SF (where I'm sure you can still play it). The Rock-Ola does not even garner a mention on the website, but I did read that the owner loves to trade. Better start preparing an offer for him, as I am not sure he knows the value of what he has. If you don't make an offer, then I will!

-1917 White Sox World Series Jersey (if you havn't seen one...incredible!)
-The oversized Cubs Pennant I have only seen in the collection of our own Mark Steinberg. (I'm working out and taking Zocor simply so I can outlive him...ha ha).

Stretch goal.
-Joe Jackson decal bat ( 90% of decal in tact)
-Ruth single signed ball

Attainable.
-Any other oversized teens Cubs pennant
-Spalding Catcher or 1st baseman
-Honus Wagner store model bat (I'm close to closing a deal for this one)

I've seen that Rock-ola game on Pier 45. I work in San Francisco and go down there from time to time when I have visitors in town. Are you in the Bay Area? It seems like there are few of us vintage collectors here in the Bay Area compared to the New York/New Jersey area where I grew up.

I was born in S.F. but moved away as a child. I live near Seattle now, but still get down to the Bay area quite frequently for work. Plus, it's my favorite city on the West Coast to visit.

The last time I saw the Rock-Ola was at the Cliff House. What a cool view out to the Ocean, with the historic Sutro Baths. Almost looks like archaic ruins from Athens or ancient Rome...

But you're right... not as many collectors on the West Coast. If so, they should come out of the closet now(sorry... bad S.F. reference) I do wish there were more collectors and shows out this way!

They used to have a Rock-Ola in the arcade on Main Street in Disney World. It was there in 1982 when I visited as a kid and I played it a number of times. I think that they let people play the game since they don't break often, and when they do, they are pretty easy to fix. The mechanical aspects of the game are relatively simple.

Dan, Nicodemus was an all black town settled after the Civil War by former slaves. I don't know if they ever had a team or not but if they did a photo would be very rare. The town is still in existence and really any early photo from there would be a prize.

I'd love to locate a team photo of the 1902 Cincinnati Red Stockings. No one I've talked to knows of one.

And a manual-alphabet card autographed by "Dummy" Taylor on the blank side—he used to give these away to fans, and they seem to be fantastically rare.

Does anyone have "Dummy" Hoy game cards—WG1 or E.R. Williams? I'm looking for high-quality images, as the originals are likely unaffordable.

Since Rob made his wants known in such a visual manner, I thought I would give everyone a chance to see the one on Mike's want-list, too. Here's the pennant Mike referred to (18 posts above...)

You guys don't need to take Zocor or workout, in order to out-live me. My metabolism has slowed to a halt, and I'm now buying a new pair of "fat pants" every 3 months. I moved to Seattle, because In & Out Burger isn't here yet. Plus, the stress of my daughter's driving has done irreversible damage to my heart. So these things will be yours before you know it...

Mike's right... should have thought to put that one as my holy grail... top of the list for sure!

Mitchell & Ness actually had the nerve to make a repro of that particular one. It looks pretty faithful to the original (on my computer monitor, at least). I may have to go for the repro if no real ones turn up within the next 20 years or so.

Does anyone know how many of these pre-war pennants actually exist out there in terms of variations and numbers surviving of each example? I would imagine it would make for an incredible and vibrant reference book.

Greg... I am not sure if anyone really knows the answer as to how many of these still exist. It isn't many, based on the frequency of Catalogue Auctions and Ebay making these Oversized ones available. Even Halper (with his vast array of memorabilia) had less than 5 in his collection.

A reference book for pennants would be a terrific endeavor... I wish one was available. I have had visions of putting one together, but always think of Kramer on Seinfeld (doing a Coffee Table Book about Coffee Tables). It would make for a very stunning and visual book, but how many people would really be interested (or buy it?)

Perhaps a more realistic venture would be a book similar to Smithsonian Baseball... but with a Chapter for Pennants, one for Figural Pieces, one for Vintage Equipment, one for Advertising Pieces, one for Vintage Games, etc.

Doing a book is a big job, especially if you have to talk to a publisher to publish it. Sometimes it could cost a lot of cash out of hand.

On the other hand, sometimes a publisher will do it without it costing anything. We co-published a book about seven years ago call New England Breweriana by Schiffer books. Full color, gorgeous book. On amazon, ebay, all the time. They did all the photography and the layout.
But, like you said, there may not be enough pennants out there to fill a whole book.
