October 26, 1946, marks the 79th anniversary of the inauguration of the Gran Stadium de La Habana. I am showing photos of the construction of the field. Baseball has been played on this field for three centuries. In the 1880s, a gazebo and field were built, and games were played on Sundays and holidays. This continued into the early 20th century, until the inauguration in 1946. It was the home of the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame.

Default Gran Stadium

Thanks Rolando. Here is the image of the back cover of the Propagandas Montiel Reyes del Deporte album featuring the stadium. I believe this set was issued in 1946 to coincide with the opening of the stadium.

Default Julian Castillo

Al, what a great card. Julian Castillo was one of the greats of Cuban baseball. He was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1943, He had a .310 lifetime Cuban league batting average. In 1901 with the San Francisco club (see photo) he batted .454. He led the league in batting, Hits, Doubles and Triples four times. He was born in Havana in 1881 and died in 1948.

And this is the only card of him that I am aware of. For whatever reason I thought of him while watching the World Series in the context of the "unideal" body type of Kirk. By 1910 Juan had put on a bit more weight than he had earlier in the decade... LOL.
