Just spoke with a gentleman who has a Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker L1 leather piece which originated from the collection of an MLB umpire. These pieces will be coming to a major auction house at some point. Here’s the Cobb to wet your whistle.

I've been seeing a lot of things I've never seen before lately; this DEFINITELY being one of them. Is it the only Leather set with the "L" Designation? Or is there an "L2" somewhere? What's something like this expected to bring at Auction? High $XX,XXX or we talking $XXX,XXX?

Always wondered...... was there any practical use for these based on the shape or is it just to hang on the wall? Rocky

My pleasure. If you want to venture into the light side of card collecting, take a look at the gallery in its entirety. It's not what everybody collects but there is so much variety. http://www.moviecard.com/gallery/showtime2.html

Of course, the L1s were the big premium of the group that included T3s and S81 silks. Not sure how many Turkey Red cigarette coupons needed to redeem to get these, but it was a lot. They do surface from time to time, and there have been some nice collections assembled over the years. Seems like a strange choice, and it would interesting to know the story. I've always loved the silks myself, they are so pretty.

Here are a few examples of the coupons that you had to collect to turn in for the Leather, Silk or Cabinet card of your choice.

One of these days I need to figure out a way to take a better picture of my display with the Dooin Silk, Leather and Cabinet as its in a room with poor lighting and the flash completely washes out the picture. I do like collecting the tobacco coupons as its cool to see what premiums were available and how long they were available for. Jay, Like you, I've seen that period ad display and it is beautiful. Too rich for my blood as well so that is why I put my poor mans display together.

Reading this thread gave me a strong feeling of deja vu. I had to check the dates a few times just to make sure I wasn’t reading comments from a decade ago. I’d wager there’s an old thread with many of the same images, jokes, etc. If someone knows the thread, please post a link.

I believe I found my answer. The Helmar Beer company reproduced them in 2011. The originals have blank backs, the reprints have Helmar on the back.

I believe we recently saw another L1 Cobb that is either coming up for major auction or already in a major auction. I believe well into 5-figures was the best guess.
