While the money would be nice, if this card wasn't valuable, the only issue I'd have in using it for toilet paper would be the chance of nasty paper cuts.

The fact that this thing sold for even a fraction of what it did...well, it certainly makes a person wonder about things, doesn't it?

Manufactured rarity can do you know what to my you know what.

The under bidder told himself “I’m not going a penny over $12,932,000”.

Uh huh….I don’t believe this is real.

We say this every time but lots of money and individuals in athletes. actors, over seas, tech, hedge fund type people buying cards. Not regular people. This is not eBay fake non-buyer stuff. Different world.

I was watching a video on YouTube the other day that said the modern card market bubble is about to burst. I guess this buyer doesn't believe it.

These modern cards selling for these insane prices, will not see these prices down the line. They just won't. It's today hype.

People have been complaining like this for 4 years. But the modern market now relies on breakers. The amount of product they buy, hype, and churn through is absurd. If you're not on Twitter, X, to hear the complaints, and then watch people continue to buy crappy product, you're in for a treat. Facebook has a forum called Sportscard Nonsense. A lot of those posts are collectors opening boxes to get an auto of a 29 yo journeyman MiLB player who finally debuted. Or getting 3 autos of the same journeyman player from the same box.

Not sure I'd brag about being the high bidder on this. The cheeto that looks like Lincoln, maybe, but not laying out 12 mil for this.

Yes, they are. Both players had plenty of game-used jerseys at the time. Logoman is the hobby nomenclature for the league patch of the sport, in this case the NBA logo patch.

The MLB logoman has the batter patch.

Thank you, John, info much appreciated. And just for the record, with all the crazy shit going on these days, this hardly rates as anything more than mind-boggling. I'm a big fan of capitalism and achieving great wealth as a motivator, and those that do are certainly entitled to spend it any way they see fit. And let's face it, that's a great card, but really...

So if these patches came from gamers, I wonder what happened to the gamers they came from? Cut up for uni cards, presumably, and that's an ouch to me. One other observation: I don't think either of these guys, Kobe or Michael, will end up being regarded as the GOAT in time. That distinction will go to LeBron as soon as he quits, IMO. For that reason and others, I don't think this card will prove to be a good investment. But hey, I'm the guy that shorted the market when Covid hit, so what do I know?

I believe it was Mark Cuban, but I hear Lori Greiner was in the running, but dropped out when she decided she couldn't figure out how to distribute this single card out to each new incarnation of Bed Bath and Beyond stores.

Not sure if this was answered for you. But logoman is the official sport logo nickname. So in MLB, it's the silhouette of a hitter. In NBA its the silhouette of a layup. NFL doesn't have one.

I actually think this card is awesome. Not sure it's $13M awesome, but I knew it would clear $1M. IMO, basketball cards will eventually eclipse MLB cards for most expensive in the top 10 lists, top 20. It's worldwide popularity will reign supreme.

If this card was MJ and LeBron (the two greatest of all time) and a PSA 10 I could see more of a case for it.

Many, many more people around the world go to professional baseball games each year than go to pro basketball games, or any other sport, for that matter. It's not even close.

I wouldn't think so. I'm pretty sure the average human goes to more pro soccer games than pro baseball games each year, but I think he was right about the "it's not even close" bit.

Let me know what you find out, since I made that up entirely. But think about it: with seasons twice as long and attendance/game about the same, even AAA baseball and probably even AA and many A leagues outdraw the NBA every year. Who goes to minor-league basketball games? And I know basketball is popular in many other countries, but so is baseball, with longer seasons and bigger arenas. I honestly don't see how it can be close, using live attendance as a measure of popularity: Baseball is King!
