Obviously this topic has been discussed many times before, but due to his frustrations, Jon English Antique Sports & Cards put his money into conducting his own research and he presents the results. Here's a link to the YouTube video titled Changes to PSA Grading, Part 2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAIZf42GkCo Jon has been submitting cards to PSA grading since 2008. He feels that PSA grades from 10 years ago are completely different than they are today. He feels PSA has totally changed their grading standards and that they should really start a new registry. To prove his point, he bought older examples of PSA graded cards in high grade and compared them to cards he submitted that were basically from vending. Then he cracked out the old PSA graded cards and resubmitted them to PSA to see how they would grade today. Watch the video to see the results. Comments? |

If they start new registries, it would seriously shake up the registry collectors. |

As I have always said....buy the card, not the grade.....

Psa and ebay joined up and is it a mess. They say they are authenticating ungraded cards but they are really grading
them and coming back on the seller with things like the case had a scratch, or the card had major flaws like a corner tip blunt you can't see with the eye so they are magnfying the card then you get buyers who want to know how much you are going to reduce the price. Also giving comparables that are nuts. Like a price for a regular card on a limited card say 1 /5. Psa is going to ruin ebay. |

I watched the video, and here are a couple thoughts from someone who has never submitted a card for grading.
Grading is so inherently subjective, even with (allegedly) objective standards that a grade difference of 1 is going to happen and most likely frequently - that's simply a bug in the system that has to be accepted. However, changes in 2 grades are much harder to take, and especially at scale are troubling, and changes in 3 just cinches the case. I will say that that 1957 Football Johnny Olszewski with serial number ending in 303 that shows a 5 is probably over graded - you can clearly see what looks like warping, almost like water damage. Final thought - I would LOVE to explore his shelves in the background. |

One of the issues for me is that the grading standards have changed so much that it doesn't even make sense to get certain years of cards graded.

I wish PSA cert verification included the date the card was graded.

This!! This I agree with it! I know for the fairly new certs from the last 4 or 5 years, you can gauge, but this would be a wonderful addition that I know will never happen. Sad.

The current standards are comical. Taking most of the qualifiers away has killed it in my opinion. Cards that should be getting 8 and 9 oc are being graded 4 and 5. Those grades are meant for mid grade cards. Mint cards are mint. Some are just centered better than others.
