There isn't any question that SGC will disappear over time. There are obvious cost synergies to be obtained (as with every acquisition) that will be attained. If PSA can reasonably absorb SGC's share into PSA, it makes little sense to have a separate operations process, corporate structure, procurement mechanism, website, submissions process, etc. That's all just added cost for no real benefit.

Hey, wow! Does anyone envision the super prized and highly collectible double slabbed card for just twice the price? "Hey, this is a Babe Mantle Shlabotnik PSA 8.0 and SGC 8.5, the only one in existence! And because I like you, I'm willing to let you have it for x00,000! And I'll throw in this bottle of hooch free of charge."

How is shipping cards anywhere to be graded "efficient"? Mine will very efficiently just stay in my binder at home.

Things could change after they go public and Nat Turner cashes out. Maybe the board will select a new CEO. Perhaps grading standards could become important again under new leadership. Perhaps the market will sour on the SGC brand. Perhaps it won't. Who knows. But as long as there is strong demand for SGC, they will remain.
You are probably right on this part Snow. I guess my question now is on the demand piece.

To my knowledge, SGC has never graded more than 200k a month. The past year, they have been between 129k - 194k a month. Months vary, I get it, but do you think they will ever grade over 200k a month?

I've previously said, and still believe, that SGC will stay around. Their jersey authentication (Dave Grob) is known as the best in the business.

I was just saying, IF they were going to consolidate, they would set up shop at the same location, because it would be easier to acquire a building than hire and train an entire new workforce.

I think SGC will always be content with what they do and specialize in, vintage pre and post war. They never really tried to compete with PSA or CSG when it comes to Modern or Gaming Cards.

SGC Customers are predominately vintage collectors who enjoy their slabs and fast turn around times along with more affordable pricing. Idk what will happen...either way the card hobby will go on and be stronger than ever down the road.

The highlighted part is a huuuuuuuge component of going with SGC. Every time I'm at a show these days, the tables are flooded with tuxedos. An exponential rise from the 'old days.'
Dealers tell me, "Sure, they may sell for a little less (than PSA), but I get them back cheaply and immediately, so I'm ready for the show."

Nowadays, they usually don't even sell for less because PSA vintage graders have moved the goal posts down by about two full grades on average. Whereas SGC has only moved them down by about one full grade. You can get unlucky with any submission, but on average, you're typically going to get better/more accurate grades with SGC these days.

It's so busy nobody grades there anymore...

Agree, second place is just fine for them.

Great discussion! However, 62 posts and not a single card pictured…time for some. And, no better than the Top 10 highest ever sold. Tellingly, 8 of which are NOT in PSA holders and likely won’t be sent in for crossover for risk of mis-grading downward…our hobby’s mantra: buy the card not the grade (or holder).

Great post! But the soiling on the Yellow Ruth and the diamond cut would preclude it from ever getting a "9" today. Just more meaningless numbers on PSA slabs.
