There is a good possibility they were re-printed with different backs, since J. D. McCarthy made postcards for player and team use "to order". He didn't print a bunch of each player or pose and keep them in stock. W Alison, also a poster on N54 might be able to add more detail. He has a listing of the 11 known back typing's with the approximate era for each type. Note the back typing correlates to the date of printing and not necessarily the date the image was taken.

Kind of an underappreciated postcard set since his images represent some of the earliest - and in a number of cases - the only known images of certain players. However known postcards, numbering greater than 2,000 makes it difficult to catalogue this issue.

kind of an interesting side note....postcards made by Paulson were one of the precursor postcard sets to J. D. McCarthy. Babe Ruth used to put in orders for postcards "5,000 at a time". Kind of wonder why there aren't more Paulson postcards of the Babe around.

There are a great number of playing days Ruth items that are most certainly not scarce, including signed baseballs. Some things are quite scarce, I get it. But some things just aren't. I have asked the question many times why are they so valuable if that is true? Answer: because it's Babe Ruth.
