(New to the forum) I came across a hand-cut W512 Rogers Hornsby (#9) card yesterday at a local show and checked with some of the vintage dealers in attendance before purchasing the card. Hoping the experts here could answer a few questions please based on what I what I was told at the show.
1) The card is raw, it has good front color, heavy staining on the back, and obvious signs of being hand-cut. I would call it a “Poor”, but was told SGC will only give it an “Authentic”, is that correct? 2) Before they saw the card, vendors admonished me to get a guarantee that the card is genuine (I did). Upon seeing it, they all concurred it was legit. Is counterfeiting of these strip cards something to be concerned about? 3) The number and lettering at the bottom of the card is blue. I was informed that blue ink is scarcer than black ink (or no number at all). Is that true? 4) Presuming a SGC “Authentic”, how does one go about determining FMV for a card like this (not selling, just curious)? I love pre-war Tobacco cards so this W512 was an impulse buy for me. Thnx in advance- |
