Muggsy Bogues.

The name is just fitting for some reaon.

Spud Webb is not far off.

I'm not "tall", so maybe I relate somehow.

Darryl Dawkins’ name has decent alliteration. But I always loved his nickname - “Dunk You Very Much”.

...and he was on the same team as World B. Free. Throw Dr. J in there, and that must have been a play by play announcers dream team of play calls.

Not sure what you mean but I saw Magic live in college. It's hard to understate how deserving of the name he was, or how revolutionary at the time it was to see a player of his size bringing up the ball, doing what he did with the ball or moving in the open floor as he did.

I also don't know what you mean about Magic...?

And is "Bubba Chuck" really Iverson's nickname? I have never heard that.

With Earvin his Johnson was also Magic. Only guy I know from back in the day that got aids and gained weight while living a long life.

During his early childhood years in Hampton, Iverson was given the nickname "Bubba Chuck". A childhood friend, Jaime Rogers, said that Iverson would always "look out for the younger kids" and that "he could teach anybody." This is a copy/paste from a google search, I have always called him that.

Yeah, had he contracted it earlier I don't think the life saving drugs would have been available and his outcome probably would have been different. And of course he had the benefit of the best possible care.

Interesting about Iverson. I guess that nickname became less used as he got older.

IIRC Magic was spending something like $25,000 a month on drugs that almost anyone else would not have been able to afford at the time. Thank goodness the science has advanced to where it's basically not a deadly virus anymore. (For those in US, I should say)

Like in football with MacArthur Lane, there is only one answer to this question, and it is Otis Birdsong.

Depending on the day my all time favorite is either Magic or Alonzo Mourning so I am all for Magic and being able to afford all the drugs.

Yes, in the first few years the death rate was horrifying.

Magic is definitely one of the greatest ever. What do you think about comparisons between him and LeBron, or him and Luka Doncic?

Right, and so much misinformation too that made it even scarier - like that we could all be getting it from a swimming pool or a public restroom.

There was, of course, also a very ugly narrative from certain segments of society.

Wasn't it actually Magic's announcement that finally made most people stop thinking of it as only something gay men could get?

I don't recall, but I think it was certainly well understood early on that many people were contracting it from transfusions but that may not have fit the narrative. And even with Magic, IIRC many people were speculating that he was gay/bi.

I totally forgot about that last part. Those rumors persisted for some time.

Imagine me, operating on AIDs patients. True.

I don't know another surgeon who got infected in the operating room, but we were all perhaps overly cognizant of the possibility. Then again, you had to remember who the patient was and not cut yourself instead. Double gloves were not the answer.

I know it doesn't count but honorable mention goes to Meadowlark Lemon.

Their names aren't funny by themselves, but I got a kick out having Rolando Blackmon and Ronaldo Balkman in the league at the same time.

I always thought Jan Van Breda Kolff was a cool name.

That's a great one.

What about his dad: Butch van Breda Kolff

There are also the obvious great names we overlook because we've been exposed to them so often.

Both Lew Alcinder and Kareem Abdul Jabbar are great names for a dominant, yet graceful center.

Wilt Chamberlain is about the best name you can have for a player of his skill set.

When I was a kid playing Strat-O-Matic basketball, I always loved the name Granville Waiters. That was a good thing, because there wasn't much else to love about Granville's Strat-O-Matic card.
