I believe everyone’s right so far, including Ben. Matsui did hit a Homer in the 2nd game of the season, not the first in his old ballpark in Japan. I’ve changed the question to reflect that Matsui got the first hit on Opening Day in 2004 at the Tokyo Dome, but it wasn’t a Home Run (it was a double). Good catch!

Extremely close. Julio Franco is the oldest position player to start an Opening Day game. This guy was also 45, but was a little younger.
