I love the big sweaters guys wore in the 1910s and 20s. Many great pictures with Matty, Gehrig, others. But I don't recall seeing an in game shot before where a player wore one. Was that common?
Stumbled upon this picture from the 1924 WS on Wikipedia today. How cool is that? According to esteemed Wikipedia, "Likely Giants pitcher Art Nehf sliding in safely at home." |

Makes sense a pitcher on base needs to stay warm. I would expect that early in the season or late like this world series sweaters would come in handy. I do recall watching games where pitcher on first base had a jacket bought out to him. Nice photo.

Can't tell you how many games I watched as a kid, when, if the pitcher somehow got on, out came the jacket.
Cool photo.

Jonathan beat me to it. While pitchers were still batting, even a few years ago, you'd see them put on a warm-up jacket on the base paths to keep the arm from getting cold.

Boone always has his hoodie on. I remember they asked him to prove he was actually wearing his jersey under it once.

Cool picture above.
I remember putting on sweaters, as I ran the bases, when I was a kid. I was always a left handed pitcher....The sweater helped my arm stay warm but I still ruined it throwing too many curves. .

I do recall pitchers in the 70s wearing their jackets on the bases. Ball boy would run it out to first base. Between that and the relief pitchers getting a ride to the mound in a cart, seemed like some of these guys were awfully delicate types.

Watching Todd Stottlemyre Chin Slide Awkwardly into home plate with a jacket on in the 1993 world series is etched into my brain and will never not make me crack up.
