Default 56 Mantle

Suppose there could be something there. It appears different when I looked at the high resolution scan on the SGC website, appears to me more of an ink spot which is where I'm leaning. SGC is a little "loose" on certain things from my experience, but their first mention of ink or pencil is in SGC 2/2.5. No mention of either in a 3. Suppose because of the looks of the front, they may have said it deserves a little eye appeal bump...

I'm old school, I buy the card and not the slab or the numerical number on the slab - even if there is writing on that card, I'm going to be very happy to add this Mantle. For complete closure on the subject with respect to this, I will post a condition assessment when the card arrives on Monday.

This card does not look like a "3" to me, but rather it looks like a blazer, so I will also just add that SGC to me is very consistent and so I do know the card is not perfect and there's something (likely a slight surface wrinkle is my guess), but again very happy Mick is coming here.

i do congratulate you on the card !! and i love sgc.

for reference sakes, i have 3.

ALL in the same grade range.

beckett 3.5, sgc 2.5, and sgc 2

so YES, i agree , buy the card not the holder.

it's an iconic card.

(i'll be looking to add a fourth, after i check off a few other boxes, lol.)

Default 56 Mantle

As previously promised, Mick arrived today and wanted to provide my review of the card.

Card eye appeal is off the charts, In the posted scans looked a little light, not at all in hand. Bold colors with only a hint of "snow" in the crowd section and lightly on Mick's hat.

Under heavy magnification (>10X) I initially could find absolutely no creases or wrinkles, but tilting just right there "could" be a 1/4" VERY light surface wrinkle in border area near RH side about 1/2 up card near Mick's ear, but not convinced I'm not seeing things either as maybe I'm somehow talking myself into the "3"

L/R centering is 50/50; T/B centering ~60/40 (ie. well-centered)

Sharp Corners & Edges (at least "5/6" grade)

Minor Bottom Factory "rough" cut of card

The previously mentioned possible writing on back in between "E" and "A" in lead appears to be a factory print blob and not writing and is less significant in hand.

Mick was packaged very securely and shipped inside a Priority Mail box for safe delivery. Shipped across the country in 2 days.

EXTREMELY pleased with card in hand. Thanks Bob for a great transaction and a great add to my collection!!!

60/40 top to bottom? How are you measuring? Just eyeballing, I would say 75/25.

I now see you meant this question for the buyer of the card.

Default 56 Ma

I eyeballed the card and made an initial assessment of 60/40 once I had card in hand. It is in the case and I don't have a micrometer.

However, upon the questions, I brought the ruler out that is marked off and labeled as 50. This is an engineer ruler for scale drawing purposes. 50 ticks on the ruler = 1 inch. This would mean the resolution of the measurement is pretty good and under heavy light and magnification should have an accuracy as best I can of +- 2%.

I measured in the picture as noted (middle of the card). The left side (or top of the horizontal presentation of the card) yields to the best of my ability 6/9.5 and the right (bottom of horizontal) is 3.5/9.5 which is 63/37. So, I was off on my eye ball measurement and given the tolerance of the ruler and "best as I can with these old eyes" it appears to fall between ~62/38 to 64/36, so not quite 60/40 of my initial assessment but much better than the 75/25 guess.

Regardless, I'm extremely happy with it even if the T/B is 63/37 and not the previously stated 60/40.

Ha, ha! We do a considerable amount of nit-picking on this board, don't we?

let's keep it going just a smidge more:

i, personally, am NOT a fan of the "snow" on the surface, takes away
from the eye appeal to ME, (just personal)

although i study vcp like it's the bible, i'm not even exactly sure how
"snow" affects the grade.

not a fan. NONE in my collection. but again, that's just me.
