A M.I.B Mad Mad Mad Scientist Laboratory!

I made the biggest score of my young life on a family trip to Detroit to visit relatives in the summer of 1964. I got my father to buy me a Mad Mad Mad Scientist Laboratory at a hobby shop on the north side of Seven Mile Road just west of the Southfield Expressway!

Box art by the legendary Mort Kunstler!

My two best buddies were more than eager to be my demented half-brained lab assistants and enthusiastically fetched tap water for me while I mixed the concoctions.

I believe my father gave it away to the snot nosed kid down the street when I went off to a boarding school in Kennebunkport, Maine for grade nine in September 1965. Very sad. I've wanted another one badly for decades now.

One of the items I remember from the only National I went to as a kid - 1912 L1 Leather Walter Johnson. Happy to know the top of the ~15 or so grail cards I can imagine, I have an outside shot at one day acquiring.

My modest wish is for one card of Sam Rice that I don't already have (i.e., not an upgrade), which is something that I haven't been able to achieve during 2024. If I can have my druthers, it would be his 1922 Witmor Candy Type 2 card (has vertical back). The only example of this card listed in the pop reports is a PSA 1, but I'd be thrilled to obtain it, despite its condition.

Also 1917 Merchants Bakery & Weil Baking cards of WaJo. Also E222 cards of Lipe, Revelle & Ryan.

Every board needs a mad scientist. My dream card is the E107 RC of Matty. Such an elegant pose, white tie and all. Once had one (sob). Long gone.

Hobby wish: That our cardboard pastime wasn't rife with scumbaggery and that my title to the Benjamin Falk Matty cabinet was not clouded by the fact that it was stolen from the Hall of Fame.

Real-life wish: A cure for Alzheimer's.

Even the richiest of rich-niks can not afford some cards on folk's wish lists (such as Val's), because either these cards possibly are not currently known to exist, or are buried in collections so deep it would take a cardboard excavation crew multiple overtime shifts to bring them to the surface.

I don't necessarily disagree with turning dreams into reality.

But speaking your dream is the first step to making it a reality. Even if it's just typing it on Net54. So I like these threads.

this is my favorite answer so far.

it sounds like my wife's easy bake oven story. she wanted one forever, but her dad lost his job for multiple years (Kaiser Aluminum Lockout...wikipedia it.... new owner purposefully bought the company for union busting). she finally got one her junior or senior year of high school, but didn't have time to play with it due to varsity basketball. season ended, she eagerly looked for her easy bake oven during spring break, but her mom had cleaned house and given it away! my mom-in-law was shocked by the real tears my wife shed.

Mint-in-Box Kenner Easy-Bake Ovens from 20-25 years ago aren't tough to find though. Surprise your wife with one at Xmas or on her birthday!
