I like to mess with them. Tell them that if they can post a coined pic of the card I’m looking for on my thread for all to see I’ll pay their old man, or Facebook mate, or uncle 3x the value and also give them a $1000 finders fee. They always respond very quickly asking if I’m serious and begging me to reach out to the email they provide but they’re never able to post a photo. Strange.

You'd think as much as this is discussed on the board they'd come up with something different, other than the same old "My (insert relative) has this is good condition" line.

"these scammers aren't at all good at what they're trying to do. Amateur hour at its finest (worst?)"
Freakonomics (or a similar book) has made the point that the "scammers" (think Nigerian princes) don't want to waste time dealing with 99.9% of their targets who are unlikely to fall for the scam. Wording their appeals the way they do is one of the screens they use to quickly isolate the targets that are dumb/old/etc. enough to actually put their money where the scammer can steal it. The scammers are much wiser than their wording makes them appear to be. |

I would rather overestimate an idiot's abilities than underestimate a scammer's capabilities.
