1913-1915 Pinkerton Postcards

Good morning, I’m looking to try and find some historical information about the set listed in the description above.

I was able to find that there was a prior issued set in 1911 called the Pinkerton cabinets. Based on what I read, you would find coupons inside the Pinkerton tobacco companies packaging, and when you earned enough, you could exchange them for a player card of choice.

As far as the 1913-15 set goes, the only information I was able to find was that there are three variances (blank back, scorecard back, and traditional postcard back) and that nobody really knows how many are truly in this set. I also read that Jefferson Burdick didn’t list this set in his catalog. I’m wondering if Pinkerton approached the postcards in a similar way as the cabinets; by exchanging coupons found in cigarette packages for a postcard.

Would anyone have any further details about this set?

I don't know the answer but somewhere along the way they were given an ACC number of W530. Burdick didn't catalog them, as you stated. Here is a blank backed one..

I know that some were used as postcards, but were any actually issued with actual postcard backs?

I have never seen one. My guess is it's the same philosophy as the very seldom seen Pinkerton cards. I have only seen one with a postcard back, this one, yet they are classified as potentially having postcard backs when they were blank and used as a postcard.

I have had the blank backed and scorecard back. The Baker Leon Posted that was used as a postcard looks like the original Pinkerton T5 photo. Similar to the below image of Collins. I am also attaching a PSA Pinkerton blank back with W530 Pinkerton 1913-1915. Where that designation came from I dont know. On the PSA website the Cobb they show does not have the W530 designation but the Dooin I am posting does. It is also good to note that PSA listed the post card back as one of the 3 types of backs but of the 44 graded none have a post card back . It appears PSA lifted the information from the Standard Catalogue the also mentions three backs to the printed Pinkertons which came out 2 years after the photo series

The Pinkerton cards are on cardstock and have borders. Otherwise, they are the same poses.

I have been collecting the W530 set for about 20 years. I have a low grade complete set, (minus Wagner), with all the known team changes.

I have never seen a W530 postcard back. If they exist, they must be very scarce. Scorecard backs are pretty scarce too. I would say maybe 20% of the population are scorecards.

I have never seen any information on who issued the set, whether it was the Pinkerton Tobacco company or some other issuer.

The cards that Leon has shown in this thread are part of a subset of Pinkerton images that are on real photo postcard stock. There is a thread about them under Pinkerton mystery subset, if I recall correctly.

I sold the Collins to Leon a few years ago. At a Philly show in the late 70's I came across an envelope with most of the A's team. I purchased a Baker Bender Collins and remember asking about Plank and was told Plank and Connie Mack had sold already. The envelope itself was from the A's. Probably should have bought them all..
