I went to see the new Aliens movie a couple weeks ago. I thought it was an OK movie. Not really a big fan of that franchise though. But my buddy thought it was a very good movie and he's a fan of those movies.
We were going to see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice this weekend but putting it off until next Saturday because we're going to Fenway Wednesday for the Sox game. Madame Web was probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen in the theater. I slept for a hour and a half during it and still saw too much. Two fairly recent movies I would recommend would be "Violent Night" and "Bullet Train". Both did very little at the box office when they came out last year, but I thought they were really entertaining. Both movies are Action/Comedy movies that are pretty violent. Here's a trailer for Bullet Train: https://youtu.be/0IOsk2Vlc4o And for "Violent Night": https://youtu.be/a53e4HHnx_s Last edited by edtiques; 09-07-2024 at 09:33 AM. |

One of the funnest action movies I've seen in recent history is "Nobody" with Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad).
Came out during the early part of the pandemic so "nobody" really saw it until it hit their streaming platform. Odenkirk makes a strangely compelling action star. Just imagine Saul Goodman stepping in for Keanu Reeves in kind of an anti-John Wick movie, if you can possibly imagine that. Trailer below: https://youtu.be/wZti8QKBWPo?si=UQ-wjb7WdI4G3Z0S

Not contemporary, but just watched on TCM - again! - "Chinatown" - with Jack Nicholson. It's about 50 years old, but still a good one.

Reminds me, I recently watched the new Faye Dunaway documentary on HBO/MAX. Not exactly ground-breaking, but an interesting piece.

My wife had never seen GOOD WILL HUNTING, so we watched that one last week. It's still amazing that Damon and Affleck wrote that at such a young age.
My wife is a Minnie Driver fan, and I've told her we need to watch GROSS POINT BLANK. I find the basis of that movie funny. Its worth a watch if you missed it when it came out in the mid-90s. Another Damon movie we watched was THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU. It's not a great movie, but it had an interesting plot about fate.

Since I seem to be a sucker for a great screenplay, this is my vote for #1 all-time. It's a Greek tragedy as a detective story.
I have The Hustler in my top ten, but I'll mention Altman's California Split also captures the psychology of the twilight world really well.
