1933 player, 1955 ump.
He's not the only player/ump, but he had one of the most successful player careers compared to the other umps. Warneke played until 1945, but his first experience as an umpire was in 1940 while still a player. A rained-out game between CIN and STL was rescheduled, but because of NL oversight there were no umpires booked to work the game. The game was delayed while they went looking for umpires from an earlier played game, finding only 1 before he left town. An official game needed 3 umpires, so each team provided a player to umpire 1st and 3rd. Lon Warneke was the STL representative umpire at 3rd base.
