Walks are a big thing, I remember people complaining back in the day because Frank Thomas walked too much instead of swinging at everything they threw at him.

This year's injury dealt a significant blow to Betts' chances which were modest already.

I just looked up some of the stats and it appears you need about 10,000 to 13,000 plate appearances to get to 3000 hits. The active leader in plate appearances is Andrew McCutchen with 8992. Mike Trout only has 6647. I was shocked to see that there are only two current active players batting over .300 in their career.
