Default Dexter Press Oddities and ?

I have never seen these before and am posting for a dear friend Mark Bowers from the West Coast.

His questions:

Has anybody ever seen one for the Angels Team and why do the Cubs and Sox show 15 pictures when there only 12 of each in the 1967 set ?

Great question. When I was getting the Cubs I used a checklist from an SCD at the time. I have Altman who was on the checklist along with the others, however, Jenkins, Kessinger, Popovich and Nye were not. So it will be interesting to find the answer if there is one.

If answers can't be found through hobby channels, you may wish to contact Rich Nye. He classically takes a long time to answer autograph requests, but I believe he has somewhat of an interest in the hobby aspect. Perhaps he might recall if he truly was in the set. Worth a shot.

Another possibility is, if I am correct, Coke had Dexter Press do these for them and you would get a set by sending in a Coke Saver sheet. I have quite a few Cubs 67-68 Coke caps and Kessinger, Popovich and Nye are not among them. Altman is and I have Jenkins only as a Fresca. So there may some relationship here. I do not have a Coke Saver sheet so can not check the sheet against the Dexter photo.

This is the checklist for 1967 Coke Caps:

C1 Ferguson Jenkins
C2 Ernie Banks
C3 Glenn Beckert
C4 Bob Hendley
C5 John Bocabella
C6 Ron Campbell
C7 Ray Culp
C8 Adolpho Phillips
C9 Don Bryant
C10 Randy Hundley
C11 Ron Santo
C12 Lee Thomas
C13 Billy Williams
C14 Ken Holtzman
C15 Cal Koonce
C16 Curt Simmons
C17 George Altman
C18 Byron Browne

There were no Cubs issued in 1968. Hope that helps.

I found a picture of a 67 Cub Coke saver sheet - could not enlarge it enough to see everyone but I was able to notice that Jenkins was on it.

Danny:

I collected these at the time and no one ever had the Angels I think it has been pretty well established it does not exist. Only five are known Yankees, Mets, White Sox, Cubs and Senators

There were no Cardinals or Angels in the 67 Dexter Press set that was available from Coke distributors as premiums. 12 players per team. No Cardinals due to Anheuser Busch being a "competitor" of Coke. No idea why no Angels 12 card set even though there are other Dexter Press Angels photos in various sizes.

That said one of the 60's very rare pieces is the 67 Dexter Press Paul Schaal (and the Pepsi Colt 45's Bateman) of the Angels! Only Angel ever seen in the set.

Default Dexter Press

I think now after many years of searching thanks to Dan McKees revival of my earlier post we can close the books on the 1967 Dexter Press.

That being said there is NO Angels team poster and the four Cubs and White Sox which appear on the poster but not in the set also do not exist as singles.

Thanks to all who commented.
