FYI, for the grocery display trays, the product code wasn't a 1986 specific code. The red trays that hold grocery racks from 1981-1986 came with two different bottoms. One had a 1980 product code, as the original use for these red trays was the 1980 Topps baseball wax racks that had three wax packs in a rack wrapper. The other style is blank on the bottom with no product code at all. There weren't any with 1986 dated product codes.
Just like the other years, the grocery racks did come in a 3 tray case, 24 racks to a tray. There was a display case, but I'm not certain how many racks it held. You are correct about the 1986 racks coming in both 1986 dated wrappers as well as 1987 dated wrappers. The 1987 dated wrappers are far harder to find, though they carry no price premium over the 1986 dates. I think it's fair to say that Topps had leftover 1986 cards and had already started printing the 1987 wrappers, and so just put 86 cards in 87 wrappers. kevin |

Commodity Code Sleuths:
Kevin sent me this image which is a piece of board torn from a 1986 Grocery Display Case (one of those cases that converts into a large store display). I At the bottom you can see the code: 2-469-38-01-6 Cases carried just the XXX-XX code (usually) and packs/wrappers have the longer ones like this. Because in 1983 the large display case was coded 469-83, I assume that the large 1986 display case was actually coded 469-86. All the individual grocery packs from 1986 that I've seen are coded 0-458-66-01-6. So what of the 2-469-38-01-6 code? Would they code the packs that came in these large display cases differently than those in that came in the standard 24 ct. trays? |
