I don't do much with modern era stuff so it does not bother me. Consider that over the past 20 years or so no one really "writes" anymore it is all computers BUT if I was a collector paying $$$ for a modern athlete for example at an event or show and got some of the signatures I'm seeing I'd really feel cheated. And worse showing off a big name celebrity autograph to a non-collector, sort of puts us in the "This guy is nuts" category when the signature consists of maybe one recognizable letter. The typical answer back is "You paid HOW much for THAT?"
