It's a game of odds. The only reason that the 1955 Bowman pack was opened was because Vintage Breaks got 10 people (or whatever) to split the cost of the pack in such a way that they made a tremendous profit.
Opening vintage packs (and modern packs) isn't done because the expected value of the cards in the pack is worth more than the pack itself. It's because of the HOPE that they get a lottery ticket inside.
