I've always assumed some of these are people in bad financial straits throwing up a desperate Hail Mary pass. But who knows.

Thought $123.67 was more in line with reality.

if ebay charged a fee (or higher fee) for every single auction run, I think people might do less of this. Its so frustrating seeing cards listed for 10x what they are actually worth pop up every week, over and over again, in my ebay searches/alerts.

My father in law likes to muse about opening a hamburger stand and selling a million dollar hamburger. Just have to sell one!
If you find eBay sellers whose listings vex you to no end, you can always block them so they don’t show up in your search listings.

Just curious. Was it automatically rejected or did it actually get sent to the seller who then rejected it?

Auto rejected.

It looks like it was instead Auto Ejected (ejected from a vehicle...the way all prewar cards should appear, in my opinion).

He has the Griffey 1989 Donruss as a BIN for $10,000. I must be doing something wrong because I have the same card listed for 99 cents.

Wow, honestly I'm surprised. I can see listing an item for an absurd price in the hopes that someone accidentally drunk-buys, but still entertaining real offers would make sense. I remain confused about these sorts of listings. They don't bother me except when it's a relatively rare card I'm actually hunting, and it just sits on eBay for a year or more at some absurd price. I'm in that situation now, hunting a card that's listed for about 8 times what they actually sell for. I've even messaged the seller a couple times begging him to sell it to me for fair market value. Never even bothered replying to me. Card's just been sitting there well over a year now.

Of course, some of our friends around here are fond of reminding us that selling cardboard is not an eleemosynary activity, so our hopes and dreams as buyers don’t really enter into the seller’s calculus in any meaningful fashion. I’ve also grown to have a bit more of an appreciation that for really rare stuff, particularly stuff that hasn’t come to market in the last 5 or 10 years, no one really knows what the market is today. I’ve often found myself rejecting a sellers price, and waiting a few years for another one to come to auction. Except when it finally comes to auction, the other 10 guys who have been coveting it and have rejected the BIN price as absurd all pile in to the bidding. Next thing you know, we’ve managed to bid it up into the same ballpark, sometimes even higher, simply because we’re unwilling to let that absurd BIN seller get his way. When it comes to stuff that rare, my experience is that you have a few options: 1) pay the man, and just be glad it’s not more; 2) hope another one comes onto the market someday, and at a price that is more pleasing to you (however, see above cautionary tale); or 3) decide you really never wanted it anyway. Of course, I have several difficult to find items that I have listed on eBay with absurdly high asking prices, some of which have been waiting for years for the right buyer to come along. So you might even be vexed by me personally. Now, if I were selling commonplace junk-era wax for $10k when it sells every day for pennies, I suppose that’s another scenario entirely. But a guy can dream!

I do think eBay could do a considerably better job policing these listings but apparently they decided it is bad for business to regulate. |

If they cared about collectibles at all as a true "category", they would have hired professionals who know something about cards in this case to manage it - decades ago. But this is not their model, and I doubt it ever will be. Gimmicks like (re-) "authenticating" cards that are already in PSA and SGC holders are just window dressing to make it appear as if they care somewhat. I suppose it does at least marginally cut down somewhat on fraud at a large scale, but to the original point - some of the stuff that does not pass the test should never have been allowed to be listed in the first place.
