I think the 15 minute per lot close works really well as most bidders are ready to bid come midnight Eastern Time.

Interesting. I hope there were 3 of us, but what makes you think that? At around 11:15, I went back and forth, with I think one person, bidding 5-6 times over like a 10 minute period. Then, once extended bidding started, I had a smaller version of that for like 2-4 bids, and then, later in extended bidding, I had to re-up several times against someone who would let the clock almost run out before they bid.
