Default Father Son same position All Stars

Just for fun here is my list of the best father son combo's who played in MLB, and played the same position. It's post WW2. They had to have played the same position as major league ballplayer.

Starting Pitchers - DIzzy and Steve Trout or Mel and Todd Stottlemyre

Relief Pitchers - Bryan and Hunter Harvey (Hunter is active) or Paul and Cal Quantril

Catcher - Randy and Todd Hundley or Fred and Jason Kendall

1st Base - Cecil and Prince Fielder

2nd Base - Sandy and Roberto Alomar

3rd Base - Buddy and David Bell or Charlie and Ke'Bryan Hayes (Ke'Bryan is active)

SS - There were no father son shortstop combos, aside from Fernando Tatis SR. and his 5 career games to go with JR's. 242 games. I cheated and we will go with this.

SS - Maury and Bump Wills - Bump never played SS, but since he was a career 2nd baseman, surely he could have at least been adequate at shortstop

OF - Bobby and Barry Bonds or Ken and Ken Griffey or Felipe and Moises Alou or Hal and Brian Mcrae or Jose and Jose Cruz.

How about going the other way?

The worst father son combo at catcher: Connie and Earle Mack

All I could think of off the top of my head was a Grandfather/Grandson combination.

3B - Ray Boone and Aaron Boone

I guess you can throw in Craig and Cavan Biggio at 2B.

I also thought of another Grandfather/Grandson pair...

The thread title implies we are talking about multiple generation all-stars.

David Bell was never an all-star, but his grandfather, Gus, was - although he was an outfielder.

The other three generation MLB family, the Boones, were ALL all-stars albeit at different positions! Now, THAT's hard to beat.

Ray, Aaron Bret and Bob. One son Jake is playing for Princeton and may make the show...

In a more somewhat defying the laws of chance situation, the most prolific MLB family could easily be the Hairstons.

Grandfather Sam Hairston made the AS group just once in the Negro Leagues during 1948.

His two sons made the show, Jerry Hairston Sr. and Johnny Hairston with no appearances. Then Jerry Sr's two sons: Jerry Hairston Jr. and Scott Hairston both played with no luck either. Five professional players in the family...one election.

Back to the original same position question, I would think Gary Matthews Sr and Jr might be in the talk.

I missed them. Good catch

45 WAR between the 2 of them and decent overall careers each

I guess we can now "Bump" the Wills family from the lineup and put the Smalley's at shortstop.

My apologies to the Smalley family.

You also left out Don and Keith Kessinger. Out of all of these 4, I would likely put Don at the top, but Keith was not much to remember.

A plus for Don, he slid into third generation when his grandson Grae Kessinger played for the Astros this year. Not continuous as Grae is the child of his other son Kevin who played minors, but never made the show because of injury.
