I am a little bias to the Jackie Robinson Leaf. This is my collection and looking to add. That being said the 1947 Jackie Bond Bread Portrait is definitely my second favorite Jackie.

anecdotal evidence aside I’m going with the leaf. Partially to post this and hopefully be a bit of a spit under someone’s saddle. I always loved the 48-49 Leaf set

I'm torn. On the one hand, the image on the Bond is far better and it is the earlier card. On the other hand, the Leaf has actual back matter, which is a massive plus.
I would lean towards the Bond Bread though.

Bond Bread for me. It will one day take its proper place in the hobby as one of the most historically significant cards in the hobby. The very first to feature Jackie in a major league uniform:

I definitely prefer the Bond, but for me the uniform doesn't matter. There are some pretty big names (e.g., Cy Young, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson) who are not sporting MLB uniforms on their rookie cards.

Sure but what relation do they have to Robinson breaking the color barrier? It does matter that he’s pictured in his major league uniform that is the basis for his place in history.

Okay, good point. I do wonder if, some day in the future, everyone will just accept that Jackie played his first MLB game for the 1945 KC Monarchs and this could detract from the perceived importance of his breaking the National League color barrier, but my guess is that's pretty unlikely, at least in the next 100 years.

Even includes 1946 stats from minors. And the omission of any 1947 stats further evidences the 1947 production date. Jackie Bond Bread back.jpg Last edited by vansaad; 06-21-2023 at 11:43 AM. |
