Wow John...there must something wrong on the back of that 53 Jackie?? Tremendous 1.5!!!

Well, I am at the stage where I've built all my Topps sets...super satisfying yet unsatisfying. I tried to build second sets...I have a few done, a few half done...just wasn't the same. I thought of selling then building again, maybe pick up a big card or something fun...but naw, I love the work I've done and still enjoy looking through my sets (and the constant upgrading is fun). So I have delved into the world of slightly oddball...I say slightly as on this forum oddball is a whole other subject I can't comprehend...haha...Anyway...I have just started collecting the 1964 Topps Giants...SGC 7 and higher. I know the sets story, and yet they continually gain value even with the flood of high end cards. So late to the game, but having fun getting going. Picked up one of the key cards...Willie Mays SP...it's a beauty. Once completed, no idea what will be next but I will find something fun...it's all about the hunt. Time to thin the herd on my secondary sets and started sets as well. Anyhow...64 Giants, here I come!!!

Thanks. No, not really. Here is the back. There is some wax staining on the bottom right, but not sure that is responsible for the grade.

What's odd on this card, and not sure if you can see it on this scan or not - is that across the top border, on both the front and back - there is an indent / straight line - almost as if the blade that cut the card came down in the wrong place lightly, didn't cut it - and then came back up. OR it's like a pencil line drawn by a child using a straight ruler. But if a kid or someone else did that, they did it exactly the same on the front and back, which I think is unlikely. I honestly can't tell which it is.

I'm assuming this is what is responsible for the grade. I was grateful for the 1.5; figured there was a decent chance this would only get an Authentic. But yes, great looking card - presents a lot more like a 3+ than a 1.5. There is some light bending and wrinkles on the front which would have held it up anyway, but they are hard to see.

John...I hear you on getting a grade over Authentic...I've been subbing my 50's bigger cards here lately to SGC and have received a few A's, even on numbered PSA crossovers...but...wow, still not seeing 1.5 on that. Either way...just a fantastic card. I just subbed a 54, 55, and a 56 Jackie...hoping to get 1's, maybe a 2 on my 55 but doubt it. Your 53 blows them away...haha.

Picked up another 64 Giant...really loving these...

Thanks again. SGC owed me one, a few months back I sent a very nice but diamond cut '54 Jackie. They sent it back Authentic - evidence of trimming. I would acknowledge that the cut was weird, but the card was not trimmed. It measured out perfectly. That's disappointing to me; SGC should have known better but simply didn't take the time. Either way, I will agree they are tough. This '53 was a nice LCS pickup where I just walked in one day and it was new in the showcase. After quickly negotiating the price with them to my liking, I walked out with it.

Nice pickup. The '64 Giants are beautiful cards, but I have always had a hard time getting onboard with oddball sizes.

I know right? Technical grade doesn't always equal eye appeal. This card I think is a prime example of that. It's accurately graded, but the flaws are difficult to see.

Like some of the cards I've purchased, the scans don't always disclose the flaws.
During my early 52 collecting days, I purchased quite a few great looking cards, which I assumed were under graded but once in hand, and once turning/flipping/angling the cards in the light it was easy to see indents and the like.
Being somewhat disappointed thinking I was getting an under graded card, I quickly learned to trust the opinion of the seller I was getting the majority of my cards from.

Exactly. Cards that look EX in a scan can be P when you get them because of something that was not disclosed. This is one of the main reasons I usually buy graded on higher ticket items; it's frustrating that so few raw sellers (on eBay anyway...) even bother to list the condition of their card, describe it, or figure out grading for themselves. "Please see scan for condition." What? Well no, you can't do that. Technical grading / condition is more than just eye appeal. I have no problems with raw cards, but try to avoid sellers like that for reputable / trusted ones who can be bothered to put at least a one sentence description of their item in the listing that speaks to condition.
