That’s for sure. I have quite a few tickets from games I attended and publications I picked up back then but not many from those early 60s games. I keep looking for that first game stub on eBay. One day I’ll get lucky

Great thread and posts everyone. Here's a first night game scorebook / program where the original owner / attendee pasted their ticket to the front cover.

You guys are killing me! Now I TOTALLY want to get into programs too. Some of the cover artwork and/or images are just awesome!
I know this is a silly/hard question but what should I expect from a budget POV compared to cards from the same era? Trying to figure out if my scrawny card budget can afford a few cool programs. Great thread!

There are obviously exceptions, but with the history and artwork and detail (love the old ads etc), I think they are shockingly affordable. |

One of my favorites..
My personal scorecard from 1977 when the Mets played the Cubs and the blackout in NYC happened. We were at the game when it all went dark

Programs / scorecards are very affordable and lots of fun, especially when scored, that's why I have so many of them.

- era to explore first? - cover art matters a lot, I'd assume? - how do you evaluate condition and reasonable price/value? - big name player in the score card and/or a specific historic game adds a lot, i'd assume? - scorecards vs. programs vs. yearbooks... where to focus first? I still love my cards... but this sounds like a nice, affordable tangent to explore Thanks all (and if you're selling some cool items, PM me!) I love great cover illustrations Jeff

It's a tough question but also I think it's a great question! Especially when one considers what the next big thing in collecting might be. It might as well be programs and scorecards! Personally I hope that programs and scorecards are where tickets were 5 (or so) years ago---somewhat underappreciated and affordable but then ready to take off in the not-to-distant future. I do, however, think you can get common scorecards from the 40's and 50's (featuring some but not all teams) that would be graded NM that would run about the same price as, or even less than common cards from that era in that condition (certainly less than the high series cards).

Wow! What a great thread so far!!
I can't believe that no one has ever started a scorebook thread before... FWIW, I have nowhere near the collection that Doug Goodman has (who does LOL?) But, I do have a pretty extensive collection of vintage no-hitter game programs, but rather than post the obvious, I thought I would post a few of the others that I like in my collection. Here is a scored program to HOF Sandy Koufax's NL record of 382K's in a single season in 1965. Mack Jones was K #382. I also have a scored program to Nolan Ryan's ML single season K record of 383K's in 1973. Rich Reese of the Minnesota Twins was K #383. A scored program to HOF Nolan Ryan's ML debut on 9/11/1966. Finally, a scored program to Ryan's 3509K game where he passed Walter Johnson for the All Time ML strikeout record. Tim Blackwell was 3508 which tied WaJo and Montreal's Brad Mills was K # 3509. This scored program is signed by both Blackwell and Brad Mills. Pretty cool! Yes, Guy Bourque, this post is for you! ![]() Love the Stoneman 2nd no-hitter scorebook, Guy! LOL, what was the artist smoking when they drew that cover for the game that ended up being the Koufax perfect game??

I must admit, that is by far one of the wildest cover art that I've ever seen on a program! ![]() Doug, that scored program and ticket combo to Sandy's perfecto is quite an artifact. Awesome! ![]() I recall that I found my Koufax 382K scorebook in an antique mall that was within walking distance of my condo in Orange, CA in the early 1990's. The seller had no idea about the significance of the game and I think I paid under $20 for it. It had my name written all over it! ![]() |

This is an incredibly rare program from the Jackie Robinson All-Stars game against the Creoles All-Stars.
The Jackie Robinson All-Stars generally had generic programs which could be used for any game. This is the only game-specific program from the JR All-Stars that I have ever seen (although I imagine others exist). |

I ran across an old Dodgers program/scorecard & ticket stub combo that I finally had time to look at and research a bit. The date based on the scorecard indicates nothing of significance happened in that game (7/21/74). But I did find something interesting about the program that motivated me to post a couple of pics and share with the group.
Apparently the Dodgers must have accepted baseball-related personal ads to run in some of their programs to generate revenue. Below is one such ad (from the 7/21/74 program) from an early collector of memorabilia the type of which would be of obvious interest to those that have contributed to this thread or a sister thread on tickets/stubs. One can only wonder what responses the person got, and if he/she held on to any of the items that they received from placing the ad! |

One of my favorite pickups from the National in Chicago is an unusual exhibition scorebook that I had never seen that has some interesting historic significance.
Monday, August 15, 1932 was the Bicentennial Anniversary of Washington DC. Virtually all MLB baseball teams did not play on this date. To commemorate the Washington DC Bicentennial, a special Exhibition game was played that pitted members of the 1924 World Champion Washington Nats team that included HOF Walter Johnson and Goose Goslin vs. the current 1932 Washington Team managed by WaJo. WaJo pitched some of the innings for the 1924 World Champion squad and Marberry pitched the rest. Alas, the upstart 1932 Washington team best the 1924 Champions 6-2 in the game. Here are some pictures of the scorebook which is remarkable shape considering it's over 90 years old. I included a closeup of the inside of the scorebook that highlighted the individual significance of WaJo's only win in the World Series in a terrific HOF career. Enjoy! One of my favorite Expos program in my collection is from Oct. 3rd 1981, after coming real close in both 1979 and 1980 The Expos clinch their 1st...and only post season berth of their history, I remember this game like it was yesterday, we were celebrating my parents 22nd wedding anniversery in a bar and watching the game on TV, when Wallace Johnson (added photo of me and Wallace 40years later) pinched hit a 2 run triple to put the Expos up for good in the top of the 7th every body went crazy in the bar. A moment I will never forget
