#30 Phil Cavarretta: Cub favorite, but was fired as manager when asked about his team's chances for the 1954 season Cavarretta responded that they would finish in the second division. Got to admire his candor.

#33 Reese. I've always admired the "other-worldliness" of this image. Unfortunately, it's also the weakest card in my set condition-wise.

Not sure if the player was actually identified. Lots of stories about this card- it was a black and white image shot before the war and hand colored, the sliding player was Billy Herman, or it was Cookie Lavagetto, or someone else entirely. But never anything that seemed definitive.

Not the nicest example, but it's the only 1953 Bowman card I actually have...total classic, found this in an old shop and had to have it. Someday I'll tackle this set...and upgrade this card...

Another board member just pm'd me, the sliding player is Frenchy Bordagaray, and the only year he was a teammate of Pee Wee's was 1942.

Default 1953 Bowman Color #34: Gil Coan
Gilbert F. "Gil" Coan. Left fielder for the Washington Senators in 1946-1953. 731 hits and 39 home runs over 11 MLB seasons. His best season was 1951 as he posted a .357 OBP with 9 home runs in 592 plate appearances. Had two triples in the same inning. Finished his career in 1956 with the New York Giants.

Thanks for the info. Not a name I am familiar with, but looks like he played for11 years from 1934-1945.
