Seller turned down $ 3 million, what a big mistake .

In all fairness to the seller, there seem to have been plenty of people who agreed with that strategy.

If the guy who offered 3 mil won it for 1.5 then I'd agree with you, but that isn't what happened.

I have seen this mentioned a lot since the sale but the consignor himself came out and said he was uncomfortable with the lawyer/firm that relayed that and another large offer on behalf of 2 interested parties so I think there is more than meets the eye to those "turned down" offers and how genuine/legit they were.

Goldin also confirmed that the people that made those 2 offers were well aware of the auction and were not among the bidders (even under bidders) which also makes it seem like the offers were fishy or at least had more to them.

Nothing fishy about it. I'm pretty sure I know who bid $3 million for the ball and am not surprised that he did not bid in Golden.
