That's a bit high for this pennant in this condition. I would've thought $350 - $400, given the obvious flaws that detract from its aesthetics.

I sold mine (in MINT condition) for $550 about a year ago. Just another regretful selling blunder on my part.

I posted these in another thread, but since I have the pics readily accessible, just thought I'd inject some life into this great thread.

Here are some early athletics pennants...

^^^ They’re all great but the condition of the vertical one is off the charts!

Well, here's some uplifting content featuring pennants that aired on ABC World News Tonight (last night): https://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/mad...eason-94897848 That should cheer you up, Mark!

No way a blunder, Mark, just the market doing its thing. And think of the great stuff you bought with the proceeds! As I've said often, I'd like to have back just about everything I ever sold, but time doesn't work that way...

Hmmm … let me look … LOL

The first two pictured below are 100% embroidered. The top has a tag on back from Gimbels department store which was a fixture in Center City Philly for years. The second (possibly my second best) is even a tick bigger than typical oversized pennants, there are three sets of tassels, one directly in the middle of spine. The felt is thick, almost the feel of an army blanket. The spot is camera flash. … third is oversized and the rest are normal. Bottom two are WGN variations, they have multiple versions of a few teams (inc. Red Sox and Browns)

Mark, yours are unreal. The second to last in your pics, that looks like it comes from the maker of the “BBC” series. Beautiful.

I was watching that auction. I put in an early bid but it went way too high esp considering it's condition.

I did manage to pick up this 73 Pirates Team Pennant. It arrived yesterday. It's nothing very rare but the price was right. I'm enjoying picking up team photo pennants.

I know of at least three ‘51 ASG pennants, all by WGN. The bottom two and a version like the one on top (which is 1950) with names in a book. Rick had it for sale at the National, I believe. … they made them in different colors, too. I really dig WGN.

Edit: These give us some insight into WGN’s erratic inclusion of tassels. The 1950 ASGs were made without tassels, and are similar in style to the series pictured which includes the 1951 dated Cubs anniversary pennant. They seem to have made the 1947 ASG pennant at Wrigley and also the East-West Negro League ASGs at Comiskey. No tassels. The 1951 ASGs have the thin tassels and the wide spine like the ones they made in the 1940s. In short, it seems as if they had no standard practice, at least for awhile. But the graphics are definitely WGN.

Gary that’s cool, but isn’t it a ‘71 Pirates? That’s what it says on the pic. Looks like cloth that has stayed very clean.

Photo pennants are very much under appreciated. I think they are way cool. The 1960-61 Trenches even use the flocked velvety graphics.

I don’t think Trench made any photo pennants for the Red Sox, Milwaukee Braves, Giants, or Cubs.

Amazing, Greg....

Love them all... especially the Batter inside the Diamond. Just beautiful.

And I've never seen that WGN alternate version from the 1951 series (with the more realistic elephant). Have you found a Cardinals example yet?

Good points... thanks Hank. Hindsight and lamenting past decisions really are a waste of time and energy.

Nope. I think I’ve seen it twice. Last time was maybe 6-7 years ago and it was beat up.

What's the story on the Reds "mascot" on the WGN?

Good question. I have no idea. But it’s undeniably awesome.

I have posted this before … the back cover of a 1956 baseball instructional book for kids included most of these WGN logos. The Reds was a bit too violent for the utes so they replaced it with the Keezer Reds.

Yes, it is a '71. That's my bad. I have a 73 Tigers Team pennant on the way too and I'm confusing myself. You're spot on about it being cloth too.

Hey Mark, how much would a WGN Philly A's go for in clean shape? Both versions.

Great question. They've really dried up in recent years, so I'm not sure if traditional pricing applies any longer. But I would think around $250 - $300 for the cartoonish elephant mascot, and $400 - $450 for the rarer "realistic" elephant.

Just a somewhat educated guess... perhaps others here feel differently.

I think this, too, is a WGN from the mid-late 1940s. Much more common, as you know.

That Connie Mack pennant is one of the most aesthetically pleasing pennants ever made. Gorgeous. On another note, the vertical designs never made much sense to me. How do you wave these pennants? I have one vertical pennant from the teens (or earlier), much less appealing to the eye, banished to the door to the heater because it doesn’t fit with the others’ display.

Geez Greg...

How big is that damned room? Just when you think you've seen it all, there's another nook, cranny or entire wall you've never seen before.

That's a good point about vertical pennants. Perhaps they were made more for hanging on a wall than waving at the game. Regardless, I'm glad someone thought to invent them!

I sometimes forget the magnitude of Greg’s collection until he posts panoramic pictures, like he has recently. And, look! Even though he’s not a Giants collector, he’s got that super tough one, hiding behind the post.

Greg and Mark are whales.

I'm snowed in, so maybe it's a good time for some Trench Giants minutiae. This may be of interest to no one other than bocca, but who knows? And bocca may have already figured this out...

I'm not smart enough to type text, add pics, type more text, add more pics (maybe you have to "embed" the pics to do that?) so I'll do a few posts.

I have eight examples of "The Giant on the Bridge." I'll occasionally buy another with a new felt color or a new lettering color. I'm not too concerned about spine color although, coincidentally, 7 of the 8 have a yellow spine and only one has an orange spine. Anyway, here's the minutiae....I just noticed that if Francisco has what I call the "backwards F" (green example), the "Giants" will always be bigger than with the other F. My "Giants on the Bridge" are split 4/4 between the two types and this is a consistent pattern. Can anyone show an anomaly?

Trench Giants minutiae #2...

The "left handed batter" also was done with different F's although the backwards one seems much more rare. Of the eight left handed batters I have, only one has the backwards F. That one also has the biggest "GIANTS." The two lines of "text" vary in length and size on the other seven, meaning there were different screen designs.

And, oh snap....I just noticed the two forward F's I've shown are different.

And, finally, the forward F's on the 3/4 (black) and horizontal bat varieties are different again. I'm assuming the horizontal bats are also Trench?

We're all pennant geeks...I hope at least some of you found my observations interesting . If you're also snowed in, check your specific team Trenches for oddities.

Oh, hell...let me show this one, too. 3/4 size and presumably Trench but a very unique graphic. I'm kinda proud of it.

Oh Rob...

Those astute observations will only cost me time and money. I thought I was good with what I currently have, but now have the perfect excuse to shop around for a Christmas gift to myself.

I'm probably missing a bunch of those subtle variations, and gotta satisfy the itch. At least none of those pennants are too pricey (yet).

I have to admit, Rob, that I never noticed the two different forward Fs. At least, as Mark noted, these tend to not cost too much. Most can be had in the 40-75 range if you are willing to wait (other than the horizontal bat, which can cost more).

And, Rob, you are cracking me up with your willingness to attribute these all to Trench and then give me so much grief about the Keezer mini

The most noticeable difference between the two forward Fs is the change in hairstyle from late 50s early 60s "high and tight" to mid-60s Beatles mop top.

Dick VanDyke Show reference? We’re old.

I actually went down this rabbit hole yesterday. I decided to save a bunch on ebay to make sure I had them. I did, but I picked up a purple LH batter…..at least, I hope it’s purple….the seller didn’t answer my question but I had to get it before maybe bocca swooped in!

And, Rob, you are cracking me up with your willingness to attribute these all to Trench and then give me so much grief about the Keezer mini
I’m basing that on the font. I don’t know if we’ve “attributed” the horizontal bat before…

Speaking of the Dick Van Dyke Show, while staying on-topic with pennants...

Is this not a dead-ringer for Buddy (Morey Amsterdam)???

Yes I was psyched to pick up that Candlestick pennant. So hard to find. The NY Giants pennant is another toughie, I see this now and then in 3/4 size but this was the only I’ve seen full size and got it a long time ago.

Good stuff. I only have one Giant on Bridge pennant, its a weird turquoise color. The Mullin Giant has some subtle differences, looks like he wore a belt in NY but got rid of it in SF, also changed his undershirt and socks … LOL

If you're anything like me, you've got a stack of lesser condition and/or "why did I buy this" pennants that you don't know what to do with and aren't worth the time and effort to sell. Well, I think I've found the solution and with Christmas right around the corner, the timing couldn't be more perfect.

You're welcome!

1966 All Star Game. Busch Memorial Stadium. 103 Degrees. He was melting. You can see it in his face.

That is a tough one, Greg. Oooribay has an orange one that is on my want list.

Here is a Cubs version (not mine). I've also seen Pirates. Very strange series. For the Giants, it seems to be the last use of the left-handed batter used by Trench for so long.

I never noticed the leg issue. I like that pennant. Yours looks to be in amazing condition.

Noticed something. These weird “everything is Vet Stadium” pennants use the same graphics in the body of the pennant as the 1969 ASCO pennants. Here’s my Mets pennant with the ASCO version below it. Also the Cubs which matches the one you posted. Same with SAN FRANCISCO if you compare to your orange cloth ‘69 Giants. The cookie cutter stadium first appeared … when? Busch? These are all cloth, with cloth spine, possibly 1967-68, who knows. They don’t seem like ASCO quality.

Good pickup, Eagle Eye. Although my moth eaten Busch pennant and the ASCO are not quite identical.

Interesting … yours is felt, too. Yeah it’s not exact as if they used the same screen, can even see differences in the Mets pennants. But it’s the same general design.
