Maybe he had longer cleats (not spikes) made, helping him in some way or at least he thought so. Those look to be about twice as long as regular cleats.

It may be similar to track cleats that were used on dirt or cinder tracks. There are different lengths of the pointed spikes depending on what you did. Shorter ones for longer distances, high jump, pole vault and longer ones for sprinters, javelin. The longer ones may be good for stealing bases. Those big squared off spikes may be good for digging in to get a good jump while stealing
