When I was a kid, back in 1969, the Pirates celebrated the 60th anniversary of Forbes Field by playing the game without the public address system. A guy with a similar megaphone announced the lineups, and we were able to hear him from the stands. Naturally, he had to walk along the sidelines, giving the lineup and other changes to different parts of the park.

Mark that is so great that you remember that. Very cool. Thanks for the reminder at just how different attending a game was versus today.

This is most definitely Wrigley Field and the field announcer with the giant megaphone is Pat Piper. Mr. Piper is as revered by people of a certain age in Chicago as Bob Sheppard is in New York. I remember hearing him at Wrigley as a kid in the late 60's as his voice would come over the public address system and boom:
"Attention....your attention please. Please get your pencils and scorecards ready and I will give you the lineup for today's ball game". I miss hearing that in person...or perhaps I just miss being that young age and being at a ball game where money and contracts didnt mean much to a 7 year old baseball crazed kid. https://youtu.be/H1OyGeEdc1s |

That info on Piper is great. The youtube piece is especially great. He was the sort of figure that links generations. We Pirates fans had Art McKennan announcing our games for 40 years, and he made the game sound ageless.
