Thanks, Val. 13K doesn't seem like that much for such a rare RC of a player like Soto. Am I missing something?

Thanks for posting this Val.
I gave those dollar amounts some thought. With a final sale of $18,520 and a final bid of $15,434 that means a $3086.80 BP (20%). The 10% seller's fee on top of that should knock another $1,543.40 off of the consignor's check (final check: $13,890.60). But, according to this report, his check was for $13,590 (a seller's fee of $1844, or 11.9%), so there must have been some additional fees added in. Going with the reported 11.9% seller's fee and the 20% BP, the $13,590 check means the consignor got 73.4% of the proceeds, losing 26.6% of the final price to the AH. This seems like a lot of fees to me for a card that sold for 5 figures. Had it sold for $275 it would make more sense because of the smaller margin for the AH and the work still involved. On a $15,434 hammer I would have guessed there would be a 0% seller's fee and that the consignor might've gotten 5% of the BP back on top of that. I don't consign to AHs very often - what are people's thoughts on this?

Hank, I, too, would have thought this Soto RC would have sold for more, especially if were placed in a catalog auction, rather than an online auction. But, I'm totally not into modern cards, so my thought re this probably isn't worth a grain of salt.
Bryan, the way I read this piece, the auction house got the card graded for the consignor and presumably charged him the costs thereof (TPG fee + shipping), which I assume accounts for the difference you mention in your first paragraph. And, I completely agree with what you said in your second paragraph. In fact, I sent the Wash. Post's sports reporter who wrote this piece an email in which I explained in greater detail what you said in your paragraph. I'll send you my email to the Post, but I'll not post it here as I don't want some of my comments re a certain auction house to become public.

Here is the card, not an auto which would explain the cost vs rarity and also BGS graded. |

By what standard does that seem cheap? Just curious.

Topps Clear parallels are not as highly sought after as regular parallels. And some have actually melted when slabbed by PSA. Many people don't really like the acetate feel. Kind of like how 1/1 printing plates are usually worth less than red refractors /5.

I'm actually talking out of my butt pretty much, not even a card guy! It just seemed to me I've seen some enormous numbers floating around for Trout, Harper, Brady, etc., rookie and other rarities, and this one seemed to have everything but being signed to blow the roof off. I am fully prepared, however, to be brought down to earth by somebody who actually knows what they're talking about! In any case, I'm going to shut up now and stick to topics for which I have at least a modicum of knowledge.
