I don't know for sure why he changed catcher's mitts, but I do know that Nolan was throwing extra hard this day by all accounts. My mitt has a 1 1/2" tear in the pocket and I have always thought that he switched mitts because of this, probably to prevent further pain and injury.  FYI, I'm friendly with a former Angels bat boy that was a member of the 1973 team. He spoke to Nolan about there being two mitts being used in the game and Kusnyer confirmed that mine was used in the 1st inning before switching mitts.
